Community remedy is when the police decide to deal with the offence outside of the courts by way of an out of court resolution. This can be either as a community resolution or conditional caution.
Victims can choose from a list of options that were decided on following consultation by the Police and Crime Commissioner with the public and partnership agencies.
In the Hampshire and Isle of Wight policing area the current community remedy options are:
If the police decide to deal with an offence by way of a community resolution, conditional caution or youth conditional caution you will be offered the opportunity to choose an action within the community remedy options as above – but you can choose not to and then the officer will select the most appropriate action in relation to the offence committed and your wishes.

Conditional cautions are a pause in prosecution, providing the individual an opportunity to address their behaviour and repair the harm caused. Conditional cautions are subject to strict eligibility criteria and authorisation, if a person does not comply with a conditional caution there is a presumption of prosecution through the courts.
Below is the list of conditional caution interventions offered by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary (HIOWC):
There is a presumption that a reparative condition will be applied where there is a crime with a personal victim for any offence and offences involving small business owners.
Restorative Justice: to be used in addition to another rehabilitative course.
The conditional caution is a requirement for the individual to engage and complete a session with Restorative Solutions to explore the impact of the crime on the victim(s).
This also provides the opportunity for the victim to have a voice. As a victim do you have unanswered questions and want to have the opportunity to share how you feel and how it has affected you? You can talk to Restorative Solutions who are independent from the police and talk through how the crime has impacted you.

Compensation can be used to repair damage or harm caused. There is no mechanism in place to facilitate payment of compensation. It is for the involved parties to agree on how this should be paid. Officers and staff can of course help facilitate these conversations, but must not get involved in passing money from one party to the other. A third party is often a good way of payments being made.
