The Isle of Wight has welcomed a new Area Commander in recent weeks, following the retirement of Superintendent Rob Mitchell after 30 years of police service.

Superintendent Marcus Cator took on the mantle of Area Commander for the Island in April 2026. His first public appearance in the role was at the Area Commander’s Awards at Newport Congregational Church, where officers, police staff, and members of the public were recognised for their dedication and service.
Superintendent Cator has served for 26 years with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, working across the county and focusing on delivering exceptional local policing that meets the needs of victims.
Speaking on his new role, Superintendent Cator said: “Having been born on the Isle of Wight, I have a real appreciation and awareness of the unique characteristics and challenges that arise when it comes to policing in this area.
“Over my first few weeks in the role I have been really pleased to see how effectively different services across the Island work together to protect vulnerable people within our communities, support victims of crime, and ensure the Island remains a safe and enjoyable place in which to live, visit and work.”
The benefit of strong partnerships supporting local communities was demonstrated recently, when Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court was presented with evidence of drug-related anti-social behaviour and criminal activity at Nippert Court, and at two addresses on West Street, on Wednesday 20 May which led to the granting of a partial closure order at these addresses.
The order was obtained following partnership work with officers from the West Wight Neighbourhood Policing Team and housing providers Southern Housing and Vectis Housing.
Superintendent Cator added: “Policing plays a critical role in keeping our communities safe and secure for residents and those who come to visit the wonderful place we are fortunate enough to call our home.
“I am looking forward to spending time out and about shadowing my teams across our different districts, observing the fantastic work they are doing across our towns and rural areas.
“If you see me out and about in your area then please do come and say hello.”
