A man has been jailed after he threatened a staff member and demanded cash from a till during an attempted robbery incident in Basingstoke.
Richard Hiscock, 30, of Attwood Close, Basingstoke, entered the Betfred shop on London Street on Monday 20 January.
He threatened a woman inside the shop and demanded money. A man then entered the shop and Hiscock fled the scene. Nothing was stolen.
Officers carried out a number of enquiries and made an arrest on Thursday 23 January.
Hiscock was charged with attempted robbery and pleaded guilty to the offence.
He was jailed for a total of 20 months at Winchester Crown Court on Tuesday 18 March.
A/Police Sergeant Charlotte Warhurst, from the Basingstoke Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “This was a particularly frightening incident for the member of staff inside the shop.
“No one should be made to feel threatened and thankfully no one was injured during the incident.
“Our officers immediately launched an investigation and arrested and charged Richard Hiscock. He has now been held accountable for his criminality and will have plenty of time to consider his actions.
“We take all reports of criminality and violence in the town centre extremely seriously and I hope this result reassures the local community that we will continue to take action and put offenders before the courts.”
