We have partnered with John Hansard Gallery, University of Southampton, the Southampton UK City of Culture 2025 Trust and organisations from across Southampton to make an Inclusion Pledge.  By committing to our pledges together we are unified in our aim to make Southampton an actively Inclusive City.

Hampshire Constabulary became a City Partner in Southampton’s UK City of Culture Bid because we know that bringing communities together and encouraging investment to drive social and economic regeneration will help reduce crime and make communities safer.

WE PLEDGE TO

  • Make our workforce more representative of the communities we serve. Hundreds of police officers and staff already live and work in the local community but this specific pledge will help us to improve representation and diversity further during a time of national uplift in police officer numbers.
  • Ensure all our police officers and staff undertake our Inclusion Matters training, improving awareness around the diverse communities we have within the city. This will help us reduce crime that causes the most serious harm to people in Southampton.
  • Go further with tackling hate crime. We want to bring more offenders to justice and we want to improve the experiences of those who have been subjected to crime based on prejudices.

Across Southampton organisations like us have come together to create meaningful and change-making Inclusion Pledges. The pledges have been created from a series of Inclusion Workshops launched early in 2021, by Southampton 2025 Trust with John Hansard Gallery, University of Southampton as a response to the wider consultation for the UK City of Culture 2025 bid process.

District Commander, Superintendent Simon Dodds said: “A more inclusive city is one where people are more tolerant of one another, they are more supportive and they are stronger, and ultimately that will make Southampton a safer city.

“The UK City of Culture Bid 2015 is a really exciting opportunity to improve the lives of Southampton’s diverse communities and it gets our full commitment and support.”
