Officers investigating recent reports of theft from vehicles near Highclere would like to appeal for witnesses and remind motorists of some crime prevention advice.
We are aware of the impact that this offending has on the local community, but please be reassured that enquiries are ongoing as we continue to gather evidence.
We have received reports that:
Basingstoke Rural Acting Inspector Martyn Evans said: “I would ask anyone who is heading out to the local countryside to please remain vigilant, ensure all doors are locked and that you do not leave valuables inside your vehicles.
“Officers from Tadley and the wider Basingstoke district will be increasing patrols in locations where we know offending is happening and where offences have historically taken place.
“If you see anything suspicious such as a person paying particular interest to vehicles in rural car parks or lanes where cars have been left, please call 999 immediately.”
As part of our ongoing investigations, officers would like to hear from witnesses. Were you in the area at the times mentioned above? Do you have any dashcam or footage which could help our enquiries?
If you have any information relating to any of these reports, please get in touch by calling 101 or via our website, quoting the relevant reference number: https://www.hampshire.police.uk/tua/tell-us-about/cor/tell-us-about-existing-case-report/
Theft from vehicles is often opportunistic and offenders, hoping that the vehicle is unlocked, will try door handles. Your mobile phone, coins for the car park, sunglasses, packs of medication or other items that can earn quick cash are irresistible to the opportunist thief.
Make sure to physically check that doors and window are locked, especially if you have used the remote to lock the vehicle, then look inside again to make sure you’ve not left anything on display, including ensuring that your glove box is closed.
