Do you recognise these women? Officers investigating a report of a distraction theft in Basingstoke would like to speak with them.
We were called to a report that a purse had been taken from a woman’s bag in Next in Festival Place at around 12.15pm on Saturday 4 July.
It was reported that the victim, a woman in her 70s, was approached by a woman she did not know in the store. Her purse, which contained bank cards, was then taken by a second woman. Her cards were then used to withdraw £1,600.
Since this was reported to us, officers have been carrying out various enquiries and are now in a position to issue images of two women we would like to speak to. We believe both women may have information which can help our enquiries, so we urge them, or anyone who knows them, to get in touch.
If you recognise these women, or witnessed this incident, please call 101, or report online via the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary website, quoting incident number 44260318099: How to tell us about an existing case or report | Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary
You can also call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111, or by visiting their website: Independent UK charity taking crime information anonymously | Crimestoppers
Our investigation into this incident remains ongoing, and in the meantime, we encourage people to read the following crime prevention advice regarding personal theft, and to also share this with any friends and relatives:
- Keep purses and bags closed and secure at all times
- Be aware of your surroundings and what is happening around you when you are out shopping
- Carry bags in front of you or diagonally across your chest
- Return cards to your purse or wallet quickly and zip it up or button it
- Use a purse that’s difficult for others to open – one that zips or snaps shut is best
- Conceal your wallet in a buttoned or zipped pocket where it doesn’t bulge
- Don’t hang bags on the back of your chair or a pushchair
If you witness anyone acting suspiciously in a public place such as a shop or a bank, please call police on 101. Dial 999 if a crime is in progress.
