A man has been jailed for 12 weeks after shoplifting in Farnborough and assaulting a police officer in Aldershot.
Christopher Waite, 35, of Coombe Way, Farnborough, stole alcohol, chocolate and washing items worth £59.50 from the Sainsbury’s store on Queensmead on 24 July.
He was arrested a short while later on Station Road in Aldershot. During his arrest, he assaulted an officer. The officer did not suffer any injuries.
Waite was charged with theft from a shop and common assault of an emergency worker and pleaded guilty to both offences.
He was jailed for 12 weeks at Basingstoke Magistrates Court on Friday 26 July.
Rushmoor Inspector Mike Hall said: “We take all reports of shoplifting extremely seriously as we know the impact it can have on businesses, staff and the local community.
“Christopher Waite’s actions that day were completely unacceptable and we will never tolerate our officers being assaulted in the course of their duties.
“Hopefully this result reassures the community that we will do all we can to put shoplifters before the courts and I hope it shows that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.”
