There has been a spate of reported theft from motor vehicles in Hart and Rushmoor within the last 24 hours and officers would like to remind residents of some crime prevention advice.
We know this has been an ongoing issue in the district and we are aware of the affect it is having on the local community.
Please be reassured that enquiries are ongoing into each of these reports as we continue to gather evidence in order to arrest offenders.
The recent reports have taken place in Aldershot, Farnborough and Fleet so officers would like to remind all Hart and Rushmoor residents of some crime prevention advice and to ensure their vehicles are locked.
In recent reports, vehicles have been broken into and a number of items, including smartphones and tools, have been stolen. On other occasions, people have been seen trying door handles.
In some recent instances, cars have not been damaged but the offences have taken place after people have forgotten to lock their car doors.
We are investigating these reports and following solid lines of enquiry to locate those responsible.
Theft from motor vehicles are often opportunistic and offenders, hoping that the vehicle is unlocked, will try door handles. Please remain vigilant, ensure all doors are locked and that you do not leave valuables inside your vehicles.
Your mobile phone, coins for the car park, sunglasses, packs of medication or other items that can earn quick cash are irresistible to the opportunist thief.
Make sure to physically check that doors and window are locked, especially if you have used the remote to lock the vehicle, then look inside again to make sure you’ve not left anything on display, including ensuring that your glove box is closed.
Vans are often targeted by thieves for the tools stored inside. If you have to leave tools in a van overnight, it's a good idea to mark them clearly with your name / company name and address using paint pens and seal with a clear lacquer spray. Items that are clearly marked are less desirable and more difficult to sell on.
Consider using a lockable cabinet within your van to store tools – a number of security rated products are available. Small cameras are also designed to record inside vehicles. Visit Secured by Design for more details.
You can also take photographs of items of value, make a note of the serial numbers and consider registering them online at a property register site.
