Police in Basingstoke are warning people to be vigilant and ensure they don't leave valuables in their cars, after a spate of incident in the Kempshott area.

In the early hours of January 5, three vehicles were broken into. A laptop was stolen from a car parked in Iris Close, tobacco was stolen from a van parked in Kempshott Lane and a handbag which contained £250 in cash and a digital camera was stolen from a car parked in Brambling Close.

The camera contained family pictures which cannot be replaced.

PC Dave Cook said: "We believe there may have been someone walking around the area on January 5, looking into vehicles with a torch. Did you see anything suspicious?"

There were further incidents overnight on January 6 into January 7, where another three cars were also broken into. Two handbags were stolen from two different cars parked in Kempshott Lane and a hedge cutter was stolen from a car parked in Blackbird Close.

PC Cook added: "Please don't leave valuables in your car which may attract opportunist thieves.

"Even if you are just leaving your vehicle for a short time, take everything with you and make sure everything is secure."
