Police are appealing for information after an assault in the Popley area of Basingstoke.

Officers were called at about 8pm on Monday, September 24, following reports of a man having been assaulted at The Popinjay Pub.

It is believed several people may have witnessed this incident and police are keen to speak to them as soon as possible.

Members of the public also reported seeing a man in Abbey Road with a bloodied face who was believed to have been holding a knife.

Officers searched the area and made extensive enquiries but no injured people were found. Officers also made enquiries at The Popinjay Pub.

Chief Inspector Steve Wallace said: "This will clearly have been a worrying incident for people who live in the Popley area, but members of the public should be reassured that we are doing all we can to find out exactly what happened.

"This sort of violence, particularly if it involves knives, will not be tolerated in Basingstoke and anyone found committing these types of offences will face tough penalties."
