Police are appealing for witnesses following a distraction burglary in Winchester.

The incident occurred at around 3.45pm on Thursday, September 6 at a house in Fivefields Road.

The victim, a 74-year-old woman, allowed the suspect entry to her home as she thought he had come to carry out pre-arranged repairs.

When the victim's daughter returned home she noticed that a safe had been stolen containing three passports, money and a gold chain.

The suspect is described as a:

  • Man
  • Medium to large build
  • Aged between 40 and 50
  • Just over 6ft tall
  • Wearing a florescent jacket.

The suspect was seen to get into a small white van following the incident.

Acting Police Sergeant Graham Wren from Winchester police station said: "The victim has been distracted by a man whom she thought was carrying out repairs to the house.

"This sort of incident is thankfully rare in Winchester but I would like to remind people to check the identification of people calling at the door even if you are expecting them. If a caller is genuine they will understand your concerns."
