Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious road traffic collision on the A34 last night involving a Volvo heavy recovery vehicle towing a loaded articulated car transporter.

Around 11.10pm (Monday, October 8), the recovery vehicle was travelling towards Bullington Cross near Whitchurch when the car transporter it was towing broke free and collided with the central reservation crossing the barrier on to the opposite carriageway.

No one was injured in the incident but considerable damage was caused to both the transporter and the vehicles it was transporting along with road side furniture. The incident caused considerable disruption to A34 in both directions whilst recovery and repair works were carried out.

The 29-year-old man driving the recovery vehicle was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving with an insecure load and causing danger to other road users. He was bailed until November 26 pending further enquiries.

Roads policing officers at Whitchurch are appealing to any witnesses who saw the incident or the vehicles prior to the collision to contact them.
