Police at Bitterne are appealing for information following the theft of £10,000 of Indian gold jewellery.
Between 11am and 2.30pm Tuesday, July 3, rear windows were forced at a house in Iris Road while the 42-year-old householder and his family were out.
When they returned they found an untidy search had been made in all rooms of the house. The contents of all wardrobes and drawers were emptied onto the floor, and a large quantity of 21-carat gold jewellery and a handbag were missing.
The jewellery includes 12 rings, two necklaces and two sets of earrings. There were no gem stones in any of the items.
Police believe it is possible the address was being watched prior to the burglary and that the burglar may have fled through back gardens between Begonia and Iris Roads.
They need to hear from anyone who has knowledge of the burglary or large quantities of gold jewellery being offered for sale. They also want to speak to anyone who saw unfamiliar or suspicious people or vehicles in the area of Iris Road or surrounding roads on July 3.
Bitterne PC Tom Hewitt offered advice to owners of similar jewellery: "We urge people to keep their valuables secure. The ideal situation would be to store it in a secure place away from their residence."
Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Hewitt at Bitterne CID on 101 or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111. Minicom users should contact 01962 875000.
