Motorists advised to expect delays in and around Winchester this weekend

Police are advising motorists to expect traffic congestion in the Winchester area this weekend as up to 30,000 people are expected to attend the British Motocross Grand Prix at Matterley Bowl.

The motocross event is taking place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday this weekend, with many people expected to arrive to set up camp on Friday.

Around 10,000 people are expected to attend each day, with the biggest numbers expected to attend on Sunday.

Officers are advising local residents and commuters to expect delays and congestion in and around the Winchester area throughout the weekend, but especially during the evening period.

This follows the Boomtown Fair music festival, which was held at the site last weekend. Up to 10,000 people attended the festival, which was deemed very successful by all those involved.

Superintendent Dave Hardcastle said: “We have been working closely with the organisers of this event and also staff at Matterley Bowl to ensure we keep disruption to local residents and other members of the public, to a minimum. “We would ask people to allow extra time for their journeys and report any problems to us via 101.”

If local residents have any concerns, they are advised to contact their Safer Neighbourhoods Teams on 101 or via the website www.hampshire.police.uk/internet/contact/message_officer.htm.
