Eight men charged in connection with theft of £1.1million haul of cigarettes

Detectives from Hampshire Constabulary’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) have charged a total of eight men in connection with the theft of a £1.1million haul of cigarettes from Southampton docks.

This follows an investigation carried out by officers from the Southampton SOCU into a burglary at a unit at the dockyard on Monday, June 7, this year, where 300,000 packets of American Legend cigarettes were stolen.

A gang of six men have been charged with conspiracy to steal the cigarettes and a lorry and trailer used to carry out the theft.

They are –

• James Kelleher, aged 42, from Norfolk Road, Maldon, Essex
• Stephen Pink, aged 49, from Marennes Crescent, Brightlingsea, Colchester, Essex
• Mark Juniper, aged 28, from Curtis Road, Willesborough, Ashford, Kent
• Kevin Burgess, aged 51, from Leysdown Road, Sheerness, Kent
• Mark Ball, aged 51, from Church Road, Eastchurch, Sheerness, Kent
• Andrew Badland, aged 30, from Porters Avenue, Dagenham, Essex

The men have been bailed to appear at Southampton magistrates court on January 7, 2011.

In relation to the stolen cigarettes, detectives have charged two men with possession of criminal property. They are -

• Alan Hunt, aged 50, from Costessy Lane, Drayton, Norwich
• Sean Ripley, aged 40, from Manchester Place, Norwich

They have both been bailed to appear at Southampton magistrates court on January 6, 2011.
