Police are at the scene of a fatal light aircraft collision at Havenstreet on the Isle of Wight.
Police received a call from a member of the public this evening, Saturday, September 4, at 5:08pm to report two light aircraft in collision over the island.
One of these aircraft, containing two people, suffered damage but made its way safely to Bembridge airport.
The other aircraft, also containing two people, came down in a remote wooded area in the Havenstreet area. Both occupants of this second aircraft have been confirmed dead.
Police are currently making the area safe, working to formally establish the identity of the two dead people and to begin an investigation into the cause. At this time we cannot confirm any further information about the identities of those killed in the collision.
Inspector Paul Savill said: “We are continuing our investigation into this collision and are keen to hear from anyone who saw it happen and can help with the investigation. I would also ask that anyone who has recovered parts of the aircraft, which may be spread over a wide area, takes them to Newport Police Station.”
