Detectives issue warning about jewellery scam in north Hampshire

Detectives are warning people to be vigilant after a spate of jewellery scam incidents across north Hampshire.

The scam involves individuals approaching members of the public and placing inexpensive jewellery on them, in doing so the offenders then remove and steal the victims’ own jewellery.

There have been several incidents of this nature reported to police over the last couple of months.  The most recent incident occurred in Highfield Road, Farnborough at 10:20am on Wednesday, July 6.

During this incident a 77 year-old female was targeted by two women and her own jewellery was stolen. She was left with the inexpensive jewellery which had been placed on her by the offenders.

One of the women is described as being aged about 20 and of a skinny build.  The other woman was aged about 40 and was of a heavy build. Both women were dressed all in black, had dark hair and tanned skin.

Detective Constable Sarah Moyce-Phillips, of Aldershot CID, said: “We have received reports of similar incidents in the Rushmoor and Basingstoke areas and I would urge people to be alert to these scams.

“I would encourage anyone who has fallen victim to a similar scam to report it to the police as soon as possible. Equally, if you see or have seen similar behaviour please contact Aldershot CID”
