Detectives appeal for witnesses after haul of cigarettes are stolen from Basingstoke shop
Detectives in Basingstoke are appealing for witnesses after a burglary at a shop in Basingstoke.
Some time between 1.30am and 2.30am on Sunday, June 5, offenders gained access to Martins Newsagents in Chineham Shopping Centre, by ramming the front doors with a vehicle.
The offenders stole a large quantity of cigarettes from the shop and made off in a small red car.
At around 2am police received a call from a member of the public reporting that a car was on fire in a woodlands area at the end of Priestly Road, behind North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke.
Two men were seen running from the car – a red Suzuki Alto – before it was set on fire.
Detective Constable Andy Panter, from Basingstoke CID, said: “I am appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious at Chineham Shopping Centre or who saw anyone running from a car near the hospital to contact me.”
