Detectives in Basingstoke are appealing for witnesses after a family home in Oakridge was seriously damaged by fire.
At about 10pm on Sunday, August 14, a bag of clothing which had been left out for a charity collection was moved from its collection place and placed outside the front door of a house in Westray Close.
The bag was then set on fire. The fire spread quickly and caused serious damage to the porch and front door of the house.
Detective Constable Louise Trigg, said: “The fire was discovered and extinguished relatively quickly because the residents were at home at the time of the incident.
“Fortunately no one was injured as a result of this incident, but it could easily have been a very different story. There were twin two-month-old babies at the house so the family was extremely concerned for their welfare.”
Officers are appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area to get in touch. They specifically would like to speak to a black man who helped to put out the fire.
It is not believed this is in any way connected to recent disorder across the UK.
