Hampshire Constabulary builds on Policing Pledge commitments for victims of crime

Press Releases

Published: 25/03/2010

Every victim of crime will be offered the opportunity of a visit from their local Safer Neighbourhoods team as part of Hampshire Constabulary’s commitment to providing an excellent service.

Last year, Hampshire Constabulary introduced a new appointments system which allowed any caller who required police attendance for a non-emergency situation the opportunity of making an appointment to see an officer within 48 hours. This was part of the force’s response to meeting the commitments outlined in the Policing Pledge which was launched nationally in 2008.

Hampshire Constabulary is now introducing a further service which builds on this commitment by offering victims of every crime, who haven’t already seen an officer, the opportunity of a visit from their local Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT).

As part of this initiative, police officers, PCSOs and Special constables will also provide every victim visited with a victim care pack which contains information about what happens once a crime is reported and how to contact Victim Support and other agencies. They will also receive a contact card which will be an agreement between officers and victims about how and when they wish to be kept informed of progress in relation to their case, as well as information about the local SNTs and a form encouraging victims to tell the force what they think the local policing priorities in their area should be.

The current priorities for every neighbourhood in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are determined by engagement with each local community through events such as public meetings, beat surgeries, surveys, and feedback forms published online and available in police stations.

Community priorities are published on the local policing pages of the force website with updates from the Safer Neighbourhoods teams, outlining action that has been taken to address them. The website has a postcode search facility which allows visitors to the site the chance to see the priorities for where they live. Alternatively residents can call 101 and ask for information about the priorities in their area.
