Partygoers, shoppers and drivers warned to take extra care as significant snowfall predicted for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight

The communities of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are being warned to take extra care and be prepared for the potential of significant snowfall for the two counties.

While the current overnight forecast remains uncertain, current information Hampshire Constabulary has from the Met Office is that significant snowfall is expected to begin in the early hours of Saturday morning, with 10-15cm expected, rising to 20cm in the most rural spots.

Coastal areas are likely to escape the worst of the snowfall.

Forecasters are also predicting extremely icy winds which will make it feel much colder than temperatures show.

Partygoers who may be out in our towns and cities this evening and over the weekend are being encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather and be aware that conditions may worsen very quickly.

People keen to make the most of the last shopping weekend before Christmas are also being warned not to make unnecessary journeys and stick to main roads, which will be on the priority gritting routes along with trunk roads, motorways and town and city centre areas. Motorists are reminded to take note of winter driving advice (see notes to editors) if they do have to make a journey and to make sure they are fully prepared with warm clothes, a flask of hot drink, a shovel and a fully charged mobile phone, in case they do get stuck.

Residents across the two counties are being urged to take extra care when walking on pavements which may not have been gritted and also to check on vulnerable and elderly neighbours who may be isolated because of the extreme weather.

The force’s 4x4 vehicles, along with vehicles from partner agencies, are being mobilised to assist as necessary throughout this predicted period of adverse weather.

Please see below for driving advice and information –

If you must travel:
1. Prepare yourself for your journey – first ask if your journey is really necessary. If it is, pack warm clothes, food, hot drinks, a fully charged mobile phone and a shovel. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to arrive.
2. Prepare your vehicle for your journey – make sure your vehicle is well maintained, clear of snow and ice and that your tyres are at the correct pressure.
3. Drive safely – keep your distance, avoid hard braking or acceleration and steer gently. If you skid, ease off the accelerator, and try and avoid braking hard.
4. Winter sun is also extremely bright and dazzling, so always keep a pair of sunglasses in the car and on long journeys ensure you take regular breaks as tiredness can kill.
