Police in Southampton are appealing for witnesses after a 21-year-old man was stabbed as he walked through Watts Park in Southampton City Centre in the early hours of this morning, Friday. March 20.

The victim had been making his way along Above Bar at around 12.30am when he decided to cut through the park by the zebra crossing by Commercial Road.

As he headed towards the exit by the Polygon he saw another man walking towards him who then blocked his path. The man demanded he hand over his wallet and phone but the victim refused and was then punched in the face. The man then produced a knife and swung it across the victim’s chest cutting him. The victim managed to make his way home where he was treated for his injuries by Hampshire’s Ambulance Service.

The man who carried out the attack is described as: White, in his late 20s or early 30s. 6ft tall, skinny build and spoke with a Southampton accent. He had brown eyes which were sunken into his face. He was unshaven and it was dark in colour. He was wearing a grey hoody with a blue logo which was a pull over style. He was also wearing dark coloured tracksuit bottoms and had a silver chain bracelet on his right wrist.

Detective Constable Russell Bennett from the Street Robbery Investigation Team said: “This was a nasty attempted robbery by someone who is obviously wiling to use a knife. It was just luck that the victim wasn’t more seriously injured.

“I am appealing to anyone who may have been in the area of Watts Park and Above Bar at this time who may have seen or heard this assault take place to contact me.”

“I’d also like to hear from anyone who remembers seeing anyone enter or exit Watts Park with a similar description to that of the offender.”

Anyone with information is asked to call DC Bennett at Hulse Road on 0845 045 45 45 or call Crimestoppers, the charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
