Van drivers warned following spate of tool thefts in Southampton
Press Releases
Published:
26/02/2010
Police in Southampton are warning van drivers in the west of the city to take extra care when they leave their vehicles following a number of high value thefts from vans in the Millbrook and Lordshill area.
There have been 32 incidents of vans being broken into in those areas since the start of the year. In particular those with expensive tools in are being broken into by the thieves.
In one incident on Wednesday, February 10 more than £2,500 worth of tools were stolen from a van parked in Dale Valley Road. In another a few days earlier in Gurnsey Close, £3000 worth of tools were taken.
Officers say people need to make sure no valuables such as power tools are kept in vehicles, especially vans, overnight.
They should also mark any tools so that they are easier to trace and less attractive to thieves to steal.
Van drivers should make sure they lock their vans during the day if they are not in them as if they don’t they will be easy picking for thieves and they may find they are not able to claim for anything stolen on their insurance.
Anyone who has any information about any of the thefts in the Lordshill or Millbrook areas or thinks they may have been offered stolen tools is asked to contact Shirley police station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
