Press Releases

Published: 22/12/2009

The multi-agency Adverse Weather Office at the police control room in Netley has issued the following information and advice to the public.

  •  Motorists are advised to take extra care whilst driving on the A34 as dense fog is apparent in this region. Travelling in fog can be extremely dangerous as fog can drift rapidly and is often patchy.
  •  Members of the public are advised to limit their travel to essential journeys.
  •  If travelling cannot be avoided, drivers should take extra care and drive very slowly with dipped headlights or fog lights
  •  If icy conditions: As roads can be icy, drivers should also avoid any harsh breaking and acceleration.
  •  Stay tuned in – regularly check the TV news, teletext, local radio and newspapers for the latest information from the emergency services and local councils
  • For further advice on driving safely on winter roads visit the Highways Agency on www.highways.gov.uk.
  • Slushy conditions in the north east of the county are at risk of turning to ice with reports of temperatures dropping to around the freezing mark.

 Before you travel:

If you have to make a journey, make sure you have warm clothes and a blanket, food, water, boots, a torch and spade; and let someone know your route and when you expect to arrive.Prepare an emergency pack in case you get snowed in or have to be evacuated:

  • A torch with spare batteries
  • A wind-up or battery radio
  • A fully charged mobile phone
  • Warm clothing and blankets
  • A first aid kit and prescription medication
  • Bottled water and non-perishable food for you and your pets
  • List of important contact numbers

Have grit or cat litter ready to put on paths and driveways. Go in, stay in, tune in – regularly check the TV news, teletext, local radio and newspapers for the latest information from the emergency services and local councils.

During travel:

If you must travel make sure that you are fully prepared for all events and conditions. Have warm clothes and a blanket, food, water, boots, a torch and spade in your car. Inform someone of your route, destination and estimated time of arrival. Drivers are advised to slow down and drive extra carefully, using the highest gear possible to prevent the wheels from spinning and avoiding any harsh breaking and acceleration.

Please note that roads will be salted on a priority basis with those carrying most traffic treaded first and minor roads salted when conditions are prolonged. Where a road has been salted, do not assume it is safe.

Prepare an emergency pack  as above. For further advice on driving safely on winter roads visit the Highways Agency on www.highways.gov.uk.
