Southampton ‘specials’ help make sure firework display can go ahead

Special constables from Southampton have come to the aid of organisers of a major firework display on the edge of the city helping to make sure it can go ahead.

The annual ‘Firework Fiesta’ at St Johns C of E Primary School in Rownhams attracts many people from Southampton. Last year more than 2,500 people attended and more are expected this year on the evening of Saturday, November 8.

As well as volunteer stewards from parents and friends of the school, assistance is normally given by the stewards from Southampton Football Club to make sure things run smoothly. This year, due to the late start of the football season, this hasn’t been possible.

Acting District Officer for the specials in Southampton, Andrew Charnley said: “We were very happy to step in and assist the school when we were told they wouldn’t be able to get their usual help to make sure the event runs smoothly and safely.

“In all, 15 of the Southampton special constables will be assisting local Safer Neighbourhood PCs at this event.

“Southampton’s special constables are all volunteers but have all the powers of a normal police officer and get involved in all sorts of policing activities, from events like this to major crimes and public order incidents.

“It’s a very rewarding role and it’s nice to do our bit for the community to make sure events like this can go ahead.”

Headteacher at the School, Meri Knights said: “Local police give us invaluable guidance, expertise and presence both in organisation and on the night.

“This year special constables have worked closely with the local neighbourhood watch team to make sure that security arrangements for the event are in place.  We're especially glad of this combined support in helping make our community event run safely and be a success for all concerned.”

Gates open for the ‘Firework Fiesta’ at St Johns C of E Primary School in Bakers Drove, Southampton at 6.30pm. Tickets on the night cost £4.50 for adults and £2.50 for Children under 16, pre-school children go free.

Strictly no alcohol, sparkers or private fireworks are allowed at the event and the specials will be helping to enforce this for everyone’s safety.
