Residents in Cosham invited to bike safety day

Press Releases

Published: 07/01/2009

People in and around Cosham are being invited to attend a special bike safety day being staged by local Safer Neighbourhoods Teams and Portsmouth City Council.

The police community bus will be parked in Cosham High Street between 10am and 2pm on Saturday, January 10, and everyone is welcome along to get advice on safe riding, get their cycle coded or to buy discounted safety items.

Officers and PCSOs will be able to mark cycles with a tamper proof label and take a record of the owner’s details, so that if it is ever found having been lost or stolen it can be easily traced back.

Representatives from the council will be offering for sale items like lights, that are essential for safe riding, and members of the public will be able to buy them at a rate lower than in the shops.

Police will also be able to answer any other questions people may have, on issues from what concerns then in their community to giving crime prevention advice.

PCSO Sarah Robinson, from the Cosham Safer Neighbourhoods Team, said, “With the darker mornings and evenings at the moment it’s really important that cyclists stay safe on the roads, and we are giving people the chance to make sure they do so in the best possible way. We also want to welcome residents along to come and speak to us about anything that is concerning them, as this is the ideal opportunity, so come along and we’ll see you there.”

Council road safety officer Nicola Waight said, “We have lots of products to help cyclists be seen and be safe, at really keen prices. We’ll be offering some at the event, or people can contact us at any other time. Just call us on 9268 8262.”
