Portsmouth police combine education and enforcement in community day

Police from Portsmouth ran a large scale community day along Cosham high street and surrounding areas for members of the public yesterday.
Cosham and Drayton & Farlington Safer Neighbourhoods teams were joined by the Roads Policing unit and assisted by special constables to run a number of operations in the area, which tackled driving and cycling issues.
In addition to this, officers were on high visibility patrol, speaking with members of the public about concerns in the community, and offered crime prevention advice and cycle security marking.
PC Pip Jennings from the Cosham Safer Neighbourhoods team said: “Today’s aim was to combine a number of tasks and show the public that we are there for them, and are listening to what they say about what needs to be addressed in the area.
“Throughout the day we managed to hand out Fixed Penalty Notices amounting to £270 for cycling and driving offences, as well as security marking 10 bicycles and handing out a significant amount of purse lanyards to shoppers in the precinct.
“A great number of people were spoken to today, and this has assisted us in determining what is important in your area.”
Sergeant Guy Farmer of the Safer Neighbourhoods teams said: “The work the officers have done today has proven to be a great success. I hope this sends out the message that we are there for the community, and we will not tolerate inconsiderate or dangerous activity by cyclists and motorists.”
