Portsmouth Police take a stand against drivers that use bus lanes

Police in Portsmouth are educating road users not to use bus lanes over the festive period.

Officers are working to deter motorists from travelling in the bus lane on Moneyfield Avenue in Baffins.

PC Lee Gott from the Baffins Safer Neighbourhoods team (SNT) said: “This problem has arisen after the electronic bus barrier in Moneyfield Avenue was broken. Unfortunately some car and bike owners are using this to their advantage, and travelling down the bus lane at peak times of the day.”

Officers from the team are working with the Roads Policing unit to run a series of operations that will focus on educating motorists about the improper use of the bus lane.

Drivers can expect to be stopped and spoken to about the potential danger they are putting pedestrians in by using the bus lane.

PC Gott added: “We need motorists to see the danger they are putting pedestrians in who use the area to walk down, especially at this time of year when it is darker during peak times of travel. We will also be using CCTV footage to catch out persistent offenders.”

Fratton Inspector Fiona Quade said: “Safety is our key priority. We want to help residents and road users feel safer, thereby improving their quality of life. We are urging irresponsible drivers to consider the repercussions of their actions when driving, so that no accidents happen and everyone has a safe and happy Christmas.”
