Portsmouth Police, Fire Rescue and Community wardens take action on Grafton Street

On Tuesday, August 3, a number of local agencies joined together to help improve a local street in Fratton.

After concerns were raised from members of the public over the anti-social behaviour problems in Grafton Street, a meeting was held between local agencies and it was decided that the issue be tackled head on.

The Nelson Safer Neighbourhoods team (SNT), Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, Portsmouth Council’s community wardens, Housing and crime prevention officers went to the street in Nelson to speak to local residents and clean up the area.

PCSO Kayleigh McAdam of the Nelson SNT organised a Crime Reduction Environment Day, or ‘CRED’, to establish what the problems were, and how they could be rectified.

PCSO McAdam said: “We spoke to each resident individually and obtained a substantial amount of feedback from the area as a whole. We got a positive response on our efforts to help them, and many didn’t know about the agencies which are set up in the city to help them.

“It was an informative event for both them and us, as we learned more about how they felt about the area they lived in, which is an important factor in how we decide our community priorities.”

Agencies gave out information about the local services in the area, and spoke in depth about the issues which need addressing.

In addition to this, an Environmental Visual Audit (EVA) was carried out, which is where a street is assessed and immediate action is taken to improve the area. On the same day, rubbish was cleared from the street, and on Wednesday, August 4, areas of graffiti were cleaned by the Cleaner City Services Company.

Sergeant Stuart Snow of the Nelson SNT said: “The Grafton Street CRED went extremely well, we successfully engaged with residents in the area and let them know more about how we as a partnership of agencies can assist them to improve their lives.

“The actions we have taken are simple yet effective, and will help the people in this area feel safer and more comfortable in their surroundings.”
