Police investigating an assault on a man in Winchester are renewing their appeal for witnesses. It happened shortly after 5.30pm on Thursday December 29.
The 65-year-old man was walking along Andover Road, shortly before the junction with Bereweeke Road. He was approached by a younger man who offered to help him cross the road. The man refused the help, but the younger man insisted on escorting him. After a few minutes the younger man’s mobile phone rang and he walked away to answer it.
The man then walked into Bereweeke Road but as he passed the entrance to Peter Symonds College the younger man approached him again and demanded money. When the man refused he was pushed to the floor, landing in the main road, and was kicked in the head and side.
The attacker is described as:
- White
- 5ft 8ins tall
- Aged 25-30 years old
- Short, cropped, fair hair
- Clean shaven
- Wearing light coloured trousers and a light coloured jacket
DC Mike Strangeway who is investigating said: “After reviewing CCTV footage of the area we know that several cars drove past as this assault was taking place.
“The drivers of these cars would definitely have seen what was happening; they may have even had to swerve to avoid the two men.
“I’d appeal for these drivers to get in touch with us as they may have information which could help our investigation.
“This was a nasty attack on a man who was simply walking home. He has been left very shaken by this and we need to find the man who is responsible. "
