Hampshire Constabulary will be cracking down on burglary this autumn as it re-launches its anti-burglary campaign, Operation Nemesis.
The three-month intensive campaign, which launches on October 1, will focus on dealing with burglary.
The force area has experienced 263 more burglaries this year than during the same period in 2010 and serious acquisitive crime still accounts for a large proportion of incidents the force deals with across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight every year.
Saturday’s launch comes two years after Operation Nemesis was first carried out, bringing the collective efforts of officers and staff to focus on and deal with serious acquisitive crime.
Figures following the 2009 campaign showed detections had risen from 17 per cent prior to the campaign to 21.6 per cent following it, and police made 1,575 arrests in connection with burglaries – an increase of 23 per cent on the same period in 2008.
So far this year, 2,678 burglaries have been reported to Hampshire Constabulary. Of these, 601 (22.4 per cent) have been solved.
The campaign aims to crack at least 15 per cent of all serious acquisitive crime across the two counties, improving detection figures across the board.
Detective Superintendent Callan Cessford, who is heading up Operation Nemesis, said: “Burglary has a damaging impact on the victims, not just in the immediate wake of the incident but for months and years afterwards.
“It’s a terrible crime which leaves the victims feeling unsafe in the place where they are supposed to feel the most secure.
“Operation Nemesis will focus on burglary with the aim of cracking down on these types of incidents and bringing the offenders to justice.”
