Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was racially abused and assaulted in Portsmouth.

The 21-year-old from Fratton was walking along Garnier Street just after midnight on Sunday November 29. He was approached by two men and two women who shouted racial abuse at him. He was then kicked and punched to the floor, and his IPod and mobile phone were stolen.

Members of the public from a nearby house heard what happened and raised the alarm, calling police and an ambulance. The man was taken to Queen Alexandra hospital where he was treated for serious facial injuries, which will require surgery.

Detective Constable Mel Sinclair is investigating: ā€œI’d really like to hear form anyone who saw or heard this vicious attack. This was an unprovoked attack which has left a young man needing surgery for fractures to his face. Please contact police if you can help in anyway.ā€
