Police in Portsmouth are appealing for witnesses after a racially aggravated criminal damage incident.

It happened at around 10.20pm on Saturday February 21, in Fawcett Road/Albert Road close to the Bold Forrester pub.

A large group of white youths made racist comments to an Asian man and threw cans at and kicked his car. Two young children were in the vehicle at the time.

The youths were described as being between 15 and 18 years old and were casually dressed. One wore a black and white tracksuit top, a blue polo shirt and a third a white shirt.

PC Andrew Mooge who is investigating said: “This is a rare but distressing  incident whereby a man, who was looking after his young grandchildren, was subjected to racial abuse by a large group of youths.

“The group kicked the man's car causing damage to a light and mirror. However, we are particularly concerned that the group set upon the car while the children were sat inside, which must have been a traumatic experience.”

He added: “This happened on a Saturday night near to one of the busiest streets in Portsmouth. We would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened.

”We treat racist incidents very seriously and are determined to find those responsible.”
