Following the good reaction to the launch of the crackdown on people illegally cycling on the pavement in Shirley other parts of Southampton are also cracking down on the problem following complaints from residents.
Officers from the Safer Neighbourhoods Teams in the City Centre regularly hold operations to stop and warn cyclist who they catch breaking the law and in the last week have handed out five enforcement tickets. ~
Now Portwood Safer Neighbourhoods Team is also joining in the crackdown. They will be holding an operation in conjunction with Southampton City Council in the area to highlight the problem on Saturday, January 17 and Saturday, January 24.
Beat Officer for St Denys and Bevois Valley in Portswood David King said: “After attended several Neighbourhood Watch meetings it has become very apparent that residents, especially the elderly are becoming very intimidated by the way some cyclists are use the footpaths when they shouldn’t.
“This is particularly a problem in shopping areas such as Portswood Broadway in Portswood Road and Burgess Road “We will now be taking action against those we find breaking this law. We expect all cyclists to ride their bikes on the road not the pavement unless it’s a shared cycle path.
“They should also obey all road signs and have a front and back lights on when it is dark”
“To start with in most cases officers during the operation we will be stopping cyclist and educating and warning them about their actions but they say they will be handing out enforcement tickets if necessary especially to those who carry on breaking the law.”
Anyone caught cycling illegally on the pavement can be given a £30 fixed penalty notice. Eight officers and PCSOs along with a member of the Council’s City Patrol Team will be taking part in the operation.
