Police in Portsmouth are issuing advice to car owners after a spate of glove box thefts.
Crime Prevention Officers (CPOs) believe that a significant number of cars are being targeted by thieves who are specifically searching glove boxes and centre consoles.
CPO Tanya Thompson said: “Car windows are being smashed or doors forced and then glove boxes are being searched. Common items taken are Sat Navs, CDs, car stereos and MP3 players.
“Our advice to motorists is: don’t leave anything in your glove box, or any other compartment in your car if possible; lock your car but leave your glove box open-so that would-be thieves can see there is nothing worth stealing.”
She added: “It may be that motorists think it’s a pain to do this, but I can assure them that the inconvenience of a smashed window or damaged door is much more painful.
“We are doing all we can to tackle vehicle crime including highlighting to owners not to leave anything on display, including Sat Nav or electrical equipment holders, and giving free STOP cards that tell a would-be thief that nothing of value is left in the vehicle.
“We would also advise people to property mark their belongings, including their Sat Nav, stereo and CDs. If you’ve received these items for Christmas then please do get them marked. Then if they are stolen, not only can they be returned to you but if they are found in someone else’s possession, it can help us to prove either theft or handling of stolen goods.”
