Detectives are asking for witnesses to come forward after an incident where a shop worker was stabbed with a hypodermic needle in London Road, Portsmouth.
At around 12:45pm on Friday, December 12, a 25-year-old man from Fratton was working in Tesco Express on London Road when he approached a man who was leaving the store, as he believed the man may have been shoplifting.
When he asked the man to go back inside the store the man refused and a scuffle ensued, during which both men fell to the ground.
During the altercation the man produced a needle and stabbed the shop worker in his hand, before leaving on a red mountain bike.
The injured man went to St Marys hospital for treatment and tests.
Detective Constable Pete Bambury said, “This type of incident is very rare, but very serious, and made all the more shocking because it was carried out in broad daylight on a busy road. We are asking for anyone who was in the shop or passing by and saw something to come forward as their information may be vital.”
A 45-year-old man from Portsea has been arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm and has been released on police bail, to return on February 10, 2009.
