Southampton officers are appealing for witnesses and information after an elderly woman was robbed as she made her way home.

The 79-year-old victim was walking along Nelson Road at its junction with Firgrove Road in Freemantle, Shirley, at around 10.40pm last night (Thursday, September 25) when she was approached by a man who grabbed her handbag causing her to fall to the ground.

The black “Vanderbelt” handbag contained a black fold-over style purse with a criss-cross design on it and £45 in cash, along with a pair of glasses in a “Specsavers” case.

The victim suffered cuts and grazes to her arms and hands and has been left badly shaken.

The robber is described as:

  • White man
  • Dark hair
  • Approx 5ft 8ins tall
  • Medium build
  •  Wearing light anorak and a dark hat

PC Mike Williamson of the Street Robbery Investigation Unit, said: “Although this was an isolated incident this robbery has left an elderly woman extremely shaken and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed anything suspicious to come forward.

“We are also keen to trace the lady’s handbag which contained some personal items of sentimental value. The bag may have been discarded in a nearby garden or hedgerow.”
