Police are making an appeal for information and warning shoppers to remain vigilant after a theft from a shopping bag in Eastleigh town centre.
Between 12pm and 12.48pm on Saturday, August 15, a 44-year-old local woman visited the bank and withdrew over £4000 in cash.
She then visited WH Smith in the Swan Centre to purchase a lottery ticket. Whilst in the queue another woman bumped into her whilst trying to get into the queue.
After leaving the shop the woman discovered that the money was missing from her canvas shopping bag.
The money had been in two envelopes within the bag, and a total of £4290 was taken.
PC Richard Knight said, “We are appealing for anyone who may have seen what happened or who knows who may have been involved in this incident. It was a large amount of money taken and the woman involved is very distressed at what has happened.
“I would advise people not to carry large amounts of cash wherever possible, but if you need to ensure it is kept in a secure bag which can be fastened, and either go straight home or visit other shops before you collect the money – do not walk around with the money in your possession. Many incidents of this type are carried out by opportunist offenders – ensure you keep your belongings secure and don’t give them a chance.”
