Police in Portsmouth are appealing for information following a handbag snatch in Southsea.
At around 1.30pm on Saturday, February 26, a 25-year-old female student was walking down St Augustine Road in Southsea when she was approached by two men, who had come from the direction of Mafeking Road.
The men surrounded the victim and snatched her handbag from her before running away.
The first man is described as:
- black
- approximately 22 years old
- around 5ft 9ins
- short afro-style hair
- brown eyes
- wearing a blue hooded top, dark coloured jeans and white trainers
The second man is described as:
- black
- around 5ft 11ins
- of an average build
- short afro-style hair
- wearing a baggy dark jacket with a waistband
The stolen handbag contained the student’s house and car keys, along with her purse which contained bank cards and ID.
DC Toby Wilson from the Priority Crime Team said: “The victim in this incident was quite shaken up and says she remembers screaming when it took place.
“As this happened in a residential area and people may have been woken by the scream, I am hoping that someone would have seen this incident take place, or seen the offenders leaving the area. If so, I urge those people to contact me.
“I would also advise that anyone travelling home late at night does so by booking a taxi, getting a lift from a friend or walking in groups.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Wilson at Fratton police station on 101, or 0845 045 45 45 if you live outside of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
