Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman’s handbag was snatched as she was about to get into her car in the Port Solent car park, near to the cinema.

Between 9.15pm and 9.36pm on Thursday, February 5, the 47-year-old woman from Cosham was stood by her car and was about to get in when she heard footsteps behind her.

The man who had approached her from behind then grabbed the woman’s handbag, which she was carrying over her shoulder. He said, “Give it to me, give it to me!” before he managed to pull the bag away from the woman, and he ran across the car park towards the amenities tip.

The bag was black and contained a Sony Ericsson mobile phone, two passports and a purse, containing £25 and some credit cards.

The man is described as:

  • White
  • Between 15 and 20 years old
  • Around 5ft 5ins
  • Slim build
  • Wearing a waist length khaki coat that was done up, with the hood up and pulled tight around his face

Detective Constable Lorraine Bell said, “This is a rare occurrence in this area, and the incident left the lady very shocked and frightened. This happened just outside the cinema and so there may have been people going to and from there who may have seen what happened, or seen someone acting suspiciously, and if you are able to help, please contact me.”
