Detectives are appealing for information after a woman was hit on the head and had her handbag taken whilst walking down an alleyway that leads from Tottenham Road onto Fratton Road, Portsmouth.

At around 4.50pm on Wednesday, November 26, a 52-year-old local woman was walking through the alleyway, when she was approached from behind by someone on a bike.

The person punched the woman on the back of her head as they passed, grabbed her handbag and cycled away towards King Albert Court.

The woman did not see the person as they passed her, but they were riding a small, child sized bicycle.

The woman suffered swelling to the back of her head as a result of the blow, and went to the Queen Alexandra hospital for treatment.

The handbag was black and contained the woman’s insulin medication and some personal belongings along with an unknown quantity of cash.

Detective Constable Jon Smithers said, “This was a sudden and shocking attack which left the woman very shaken up. The alleyway where it happened is popular with pedestrians and so there may have been someone in the area who saw the person on the bike either before or after the incident. If anyone can help, please call us as soon as possible.”

Can you help?
