Police are appealing for information after a man was assaulted in Southsea.

At around 2am on Saturday, January 16 the 41-year-old victim was walking along Devonshire Avenue, Southsea after a night out.

As he reached the junction with St Augustine Road a light coloured hatchback car pulled up beside him with four men inside.  Music was being played very loudly from the car.

The men shouted some abuse at the victim and after he responded to them all four men got out of the car and one struck him in the face with a blunt heavy object.

The men then got back into the car and drove west along Devonshire Avenue.

The men are described as white and aged between 18 and 20.  One man was described as medium build, about 5ft 5ins, with short dark hair and wearing pale coloured clothes.  The passenger who assaulted the victim was described as having a skinny build, about 5ft 8ins, with short curly hair that was wither brown or ginger, and was wearing dark coloured clothing.

The victim was left with a broken front tooth, cuts to his lips and mouth, and a swollen nose and cheek.

PC Sean Hopkinson, said: “People should feel safe enough to walk home after a good night out.  The victim felt this way but unfortunately four young men felt the need to assault him without provocation or thought for the repercussions of the victim.  The victim has had to seek dental treatment because of the injuries he received.

“The light coloured hatchback car is known to have been driven around with music being played very loudly.  Did you see or hear this car in the area?  If anyone has any information about this incident or witnessed what happened, please come forward and speak to us to assist the investigation.”
