Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a man was assaulted on the evening of Saturday, May 9.
Between 7pm and 7.20pm, there were a large group of youths gathering at the junction of Stanhope Road and Commercial Road, opposite the Portsmouth and Southsea train station.
A 19-year-old man from Southsea was walking along Isambard Brunel Road, in the direction of Commercial Road, when he came across the group.
An altercation broke out, and the man was punched in the face, causing a cut to his forehead which required seven stitches.
PC David Shaw said, “This man was punched to the floor from behind and received a nasty cut to his head that required multiple stitches.
“We know that some members of the public helped this man but left the scene before details could be taken, and we are specifically urging for them to contact us.
“If you were in the area at the time and witnessed this unprovoked and cowardly attack please contact police.
“I would like to emphasise that assaults like this, although very unpleasant, are rare in Portsmouth.”
An 18-year-old man from Portsmouth was arrested in connection with this incident and has been released on bail, to return on July 14.
