Detectives in Southampton are appealing for witnesses after thieves broke into a Royal Mail van in Southampton City centre and stole what’s believed to be thousands of pounds worth of jewellery and other high value special delivery items.

The items were in the locked van which had been parked in the Above Bar outside ‘Bon Marche’ near the Marlands Centre when it’s believed the thieves struck between 10 and 11am on Tuesday, November 17.

The parcels had been due to be delivered to business in and around the Above Bar area but were taken while the postman was away from the van making other deliveries in the area. As well as jewellery the items are thought to include foreign currency and mobile phones.

The exact value isn’t yet known but is thought to run into thousands of pounds.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information regarding the theft to come forward, additionally, if anyone is offered any of these type of items for sale which they are suspicious of they are asked to contact officers urgently.

Anyone who can help should call Detective Constable Marriette Ladd at Shirley CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

A 46-year-old Southampton man was arrested in connection with the theft but he has since been released on police bail until January 13 2010.
