Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman’s handbag was snatched at the junction of Arundel Street and Landport Street, Portsmouth.

On Thursday, February 5 between 7.45pm and 8.30pm, a 50-year-old local woman was making her way home after doing shopping at Tesco in Crasswell Street.

As the woman reached the junction she was approached from behind by two men, who grabbed the strap of her handbag and pulled it, causing the woman to spin around and lose her balance, falling to the ground.

The men took the bag and ran off. The woman was very shaken up, and sustained cuts and grazes, as well as swelling to her left hand, as a result of the incident.

The handbag contained a mobile phone and a purse, which held between £60 and £70 cash, as well as store cards.

Both men are described as:

  • White
  • Aged in their 20s
  • Between 5ft 8ins and 6ft tall
  • Wearing tracksuit tops

Detective Constable Lorraine Bell said, “This was a cowardly attack on a lone female just going about her business. The incident took place in a residential area and I would urge anyone who has any knowledge of what happened to contact me as soon as possible.”

Can you help?
