Police are appealing for information after an elderly man was assaulted in Winchester last night (December 29).
The incident occurred as the 65-year-old man was walking along Andover Road shortly after 5.30pm. Shortly before the junction with Bereweeke Road the man was approached by a younger man who offered to help him cross the road.
The elderly man tried to explain that he didn’t need help but the younger man insisted on escorting him. After a few minutes the younger man’s mobile phone rang and he walked away to answer it.
The elderly man continued his journey, walking into Bereweeke Road but as he passed the entrance to Peter Symonds College the younger man approached him again and demanded money. When the man refused he was pushed to the floor, landing in the main road, and kicked in the head and side.
The man is described as:
- White
- 5ft 8ins tall
- Aged 25-30 years old
- With short, cropped, fair hair
- Clean shaven
- Wearing light coloured trousers and a light coloured jacket.
The 65-year-old man suffered a broken finger, bruising and is very shaken by the incident.
DC Mike Strangeway said: “This is a nasty attack on a man who was simply walking home early yesterday evening. He has been left very shaken by this and we need to find the man who is responsible.
“During their conversation the younger man talked about having injuries to his stomach and showed the elderly man two small cuts or scratches on his stomach. Does this sound like someone you know? If so I would urge you to contact us.”
Can you help?
