Partners in city centre for hate crime awareness event

Press Releases

The police are going to be in Commercial Road this weekend with partners from the Early Intervention Project, Inscape and the Racial Awareness Service, to give out information and talk to people about hate crime in Portsmouth.

Between 11am and 2pm on Saturday, December 6, the police community bus will be parked between the Debenhams and Currys stores, and is available for members of the public to come along and speak to representatives there about issues surrounding hate crime.

Hate crime can be anything from calling someone names to much more serious offences, and re classified as hate crimes when they are motivated by a person’s race, religion, gender, sexuality, disability or age.

Many feel that lower level incidents such as verbal abuse are not important enough to report to police and do not know what to do, and this event is aimed at publicising the support networks available.

Charlie Pericleous, Hate Crime Coordinator for the police in Portsmouth, said, “We want to let people know that hate crime incidents are important and are taken very seriously. If people report these offences we are able to act more effectively in tackling the problem, because we will have all the information available. No one deserves to be attacked, hurt or made to feel threatened, and certainly not as a result of prejudice.

“We want to let people know that there are a number of agencies available for them to get support and advice, and they are able to come along on Saturday to talk to us in an informal setting to get any information they need.”
