Operation Gaskin – man dies following assault outside Portsmouth bar

Police are offering their condolences to the family of a man who has died following an assault outside a Portsmouth bar last week.

Matt Brooks, 18, from Trowbridge, Wiltshire, was assaulted outside Yates’s bar last Thursday evening, May 13.

He suffered serious head injuries and sadly passed away last night in the neurological unit of Southampton General Hospital.

Private Matt Brooks served in the army’s Royal Logistic Corps. At the time of the incident he was enrolled on a course at HMS Sultan, Gosport.

Portsmouth commander Chief Superintendent David Peacock said:  “I’d like to offer my condolences to Matt’s family.

“Through our family liaison officer, we will continue to offer our support to them at this sad and difficult time.”

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Darren Rawlings said:  “Our sympathies go out to Matt’s family.

“A man has been charged in connection with the assault and we are continuing our inquiries into this incident following his death.”

Dean Aldcroft, 21, of Warwick Crescent, Southsea, was charged with two counts of assault and is due to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates Court on Tuesday, May 25.
