Police are appealing for witnesses to a collision on the A3M at Bedhampton at 6.23am today.
For reasons yet to be established, a black Ford Mondeo travelling Westbound on the A27 at Farlington Marshes was in collision with the central reservation. The two occupants of the car, who were uninjured, got out of the vehicle and stood on the central reservation while they awaited assistance.
A taxi was then in collision with the Mondeo. As the taxi driver, a 44-year-old man, got out of his vehicle to examine the damage, he was in collision with a white Ford Transit van.
A fourth vehicle, a red Mercedes Vito, then collided with the central reservation in an effort to avoid the main collision.
The taxi driver sustained serious life-changing injuries and was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, where he remains at this time.
A 49-year-old man, a passenger in the taxi, sustained minor injuries and was also taken to QA for assessment.
The driver of the van, a 30-year-old man from Havant, was arrested in connection with the incident.
The road was closed until 11.15am to allow for the vehicles to be recovered and collision investigators to examine the scene.
