Motorists advised to avoid the A27 at Cosham following a serious crash

Motorists are being advised to avoid the A27 at Cosham following a serious crash.

Police received reports of a single-vehicle crash on the eastbound carriageway near the junction for Portsmouth shortly before 10am.

A black Mini Cooper had come off the road.

Officers from the Roads Policing Unit at Fratton were dispatched to the scene.

A RPU officer sent to deal with the incident was subsequently struck by another vehicle, a white Vauxhall Corsa Van, and sustained serious injuries.

All emergency services attended the scene.

The officer was taken to Southampton General Hospital by ambulance with a police escort.

Lanes one and two on the eastbound carriageway have been closed to allow a full investigation into the incident.

The off slip road for Portsmouth has also been closed.

It is not currently known when these sections of road will re-open.

The westbound carriageway is not affected.
